The Envelope Please: Maximized Living Doctor Tom Bolan

There are no prizes for just getting out of bed in the morning.  The program for Maximized Living Doctor Tom Bolan doesn’t make this kind of trophy either, but they may just help make the process a little easier.

We all occasionally struggle with getting out of bed.  Not in the “I’m warm and cozy and sleepy and he was just about to kiss me when the stupid alarm…” sense.  That’s normal.  It’s the other one.

You know, where each morning comes with a sense of dread and all you want to do is pull the covers up and wait for everything to go away.  The fact that you don’t, that you get up and face your day and get through is admirable, but there has to be more to life than that.

There can be a multitude of reasons for hating the daylight.  If it’s as simple as loathing the job you go to, you have two choices:  grimace and bear it or find the means of finding something new.

When it’s related to your health, the problem and solution can be a little more difficult to sort out.  It could be depression.  In fact it probably is depression.  But why is it depression?  What sort?

Depression is essentially a chemical imbalance in the brain, but the why of the imbalance is more complicated than anyone really knows yet.  Traumatic events obviously, but your thyroid getting off-kilter can bring on the symptoms as can diet and inactivity.

It is also possible that a physical cause is mimicking a physiological symptom.  Back pain could be causing you to move stiffly, which in turn might be reducing your oxygen flow, limiting your energy.  Or your circulation could be compromised in some other way and when your brain doesn’t get enough blood and oxygen, it gets grumpy.

The list may well be endless.  The point is that while beds are nice, they’re that much better when we turn to them for rest, not to flee from the world.
